How do you feel connected to the world?

When I was asking about blog ideas, one I really liked is my sister’s suggestion of Consumerism.

It’s interesting to think how much the things we buy today influence society. It’s difficult to explain what consumerism is but in a egg shell Consumerism is an attachment to materialistic values or possessions.

It’s the thought of ‘what’s everyone else doing’ that influences so many people’s decisions.

Boxing Day at a very busy Selfridges store

It’s like a world revolving around the imaginary ‘consumer’.  I admit, I am guilty of this too, but aren’t we all?

There’s also this feeling of being connected to ‘the mainstream’. People watch TV just because they know there are other people watching, they feel connected and not alone. I commonly look at the most-viewed videos of the day on YouTube to see what everyone else is looking at. Chances are everyone else who viewed the most video of the day was doing the same.

I also get this feeling of being ‘connected’ when the shop at the front of my house is open. There are also ads at various places around this blog that I’m going to remove soon anyway.

What do you do to feel connected to the world? Do you follow the trends? I’d love to hear from you!

Here's an appropriate song:

  2. I go and actually see different countries and try different things. Everything we do whether on our own or with other people makes the world anyway doesn't it? We've just found new ways of doing things and yeh consumerism plays a huge role. Would be good to look at cultures that don't have consumerism like African tribes.. We need to get back to our roots! That's my opinion..
