Lyric videos have come a long way from the girly fan made lyric videos we all try to avoid on YouTube. The video-sharing website now plays a huge part in the music industry, with the release of a music video potentially boosting a single to the number one spot. However the cost of a music video isn't something to rave about but without some kind of video for that catchy anthem they're missing out on a lot of views and therefore missing out on a chance to get this track heard by the masses.
Lyric videos are a recent trend to creatively fill the tabula rasa by displaying the lyrics in sync with the song as it plays, just like karaoke but you probably can't sing along because the lyrics appear slightly late and chances are you don't actually know the song very well since it's only just been released.
I've picked out some that I think are the most creative and interesting.
Even if you're not keen on this type of music I recommend giving them a watch anyway!

Cee Lo Green - F*** You
One of the earlier lyric videos that is very simple but I love how the sizes, fonts and colours change according to the key of the song or the change of note from the talented Cee Lo. There's also this vintage feel that matches the song.
Maroon 5 - Payphone
Calling all comic fans!
Satisfying the comic fans Maroon 5 took the lyric video on a different spin making it more visual in which the lyrics appear in the word balloons in place of dialogue from the characters in the comic.
Alicia Keys - New Day
Mrs Keys starts a new day of covering the streets with the lyrics of her fresh track New Day. I'm not sure whether the guy in the video was actually spraying the lyrics or whether it was cleverly edited in, but that's a good thing!
Banksy's not gonna be happy.
Ellie Goulding - Anything Could Happen
Ellie called upon her fans and their use of one of the latest crazes, Instagram. Fans submitted 1200 Instagram-filtered photos that were relevant to a certain lyric from the catchy song which were collated into this cheery video.
Muse - Madness
Last but definitely not the least comes Muse's latest electro-rock offering. I don't usually listen to Muse but having seen this lyric video I was hooked right onto the song.
It's just brilliant how the visuals, reminiscent of the iTunes Visualizer, really do express madness and how the pixel-like lyrics shake and seamlessly evolve bringing out the electro sound which is important for this song.
Instead of just hearing the music and following the lyrics, you're seeing the song build up, and by the end of the song you feel like you're falling into the emptiness with the lyrics.

It's a nice change to other lyric videos in that not every single lyric is shown, only the important ones, suggesting that lyrics aren't just for singing along anymore. I think they've become a way to give you a taster of the song and what it's actual video will be about.
It's clear that the lyric video is becoming more than just a sequence of collated lyrics. As they become more of an important piece of promotion for artists the creativity of them will just keep getting better.
